The Writer
Despite long departing the age bracket of teenager, I continue to adore Young Adult books, particularly speculative fiction. I grew up on Buffy, X-Files and Harry Potter, and teamed that up with my background as a textile designer to create a world of colour in my first novel, White Mist.
With the success of White Mist in the 2023 Hawkeye Prize and Publishable Awards, I'm thrilled to be represented by Vicki Marsden from High Spot Literary.
I’d love to say my writing origin story began when I was a child, like so many authors I listen to on my growing podcast subscriptions, but to be honest my passion for writing came late and fast.
During the covid pandemic I was talking with my mum who was struggling with things to do during lockdowns. Being the avid reader she is, I told her, ‘Why don’t you try writing a book?’. The second the words came out of my mouth I knew they were directed at the wrong person. I was the one who needed to write a book. I just had to. It was clearly something I was supposed to do.
I threw myself into the deep end, an idea sprang to mind a week later, 10,000 words typed by week two, and enrolled into a Creative Writing course, due to start by week 3. I haven’t stopped since.
